Patterson Educational Site

Project: Patterson Educational Site

Status: Land Acquired

Final Cost: $1,443,672.46

Project Goal

Acquire new land to develop a learning center facility for residents in the "West Side" communities. The Patterson site will provide the opportunity to offer additional classes on the west side of Stanislaus County in order to meet the higher education needs of this growing population.

Overview

The concept of a Patterson Educational Site had been in development for over 8 years. This proposal offers a concept for a facility that will house a state-of-the-art learning center to serve residents of many "West Side" communities of Stanislaus and Merced counties, particularly in Newman, Patterson, Crows Landing, Westley, Grayson and Gustine. This facility will be located on 4 acres within the Keystone Business Park. The facility will serve the needs of learners from throughout the west side.

The West Side of Stanislaus County and Merced County includes approximately 35,000 individuals who could benefit from the presence of a higher education institution. The District's recent efforts to begin a Patterson Educational Site in the City of Patterson have proven successful. In the first semester of course offerings at the temporary center 270 local residents were enrolled in nine courses at the facility. All of the current offerings are evening courses. The new permanent facility will serve as an important gathering/learning place for all residents of the west side. The facility will highlight the importance of education and lifelong learning in an area with a very low percentage of college-going population.

In fall 2003, 742 students from Patterson, Newman, Crows Landing and Gustine were enrolled at Modesto Junior College.
