The Yosemite Community College District includes two comprehensive colleges and a Central Services unit. The district covers a 4,500 square mile area encompassing all of two counties and parts of four others. The larger college, Modesto Junior College, began in 1921 and is situated in a city in the Central Valley and serves an agricultural and manufacturing based economy. The smaller college, Columbia College, began in 1968 and is located in a small mountain community in the Sierra Nevada whose economy is based on tourism and natural resources. The District student body is diverse with ethnic minorities comprising approximately 40%. The 27,000 students (16,016 FTES) are served by approximately 750 full time and 700 part time staff. The annual District budget is approximately $100 million.
